Best Free ASO Tools in 2026 (Honest Comparison for Indie Devs)

July 2026 9 min read All posts

Full disclosure: I built AppClimb, so I have a bias. I'll try to make this comparison fair — including where AppClimb is not the right choice. Judge for yourself.

The ASO tool market is confusing for indie developers. The big platforms (Sensor Tower, data.ai) cost thousands per year and are built for enterprise teams. The mid-tier tools (AppTweak, AppFollow, Mobile Action) start around $50–90/month — still a lot for a solo dev. So what can you actually do for free?

The Free Options, Compared

Tool Free rank tracking Keyword research Competitor data Local / private Best for
App Store Connect Your app only No No Yes Baseline metrics
iTunes Search API (manual) Top 200, any app Manual Yes (manual) Yes Developers who like scripting
AppClimb (free tier) Unlimited apps & keywords Gap analysis + suggestions Yes Yes Indie devs on macOS
AppTweak (free trial) 7-day trial Yes Yes Cloud Teams with budget
AppFollow (free tier) Limited Limited Limited Cloud Review monitoring
Keyword Tool (free) No Autocomplete only No Cloud Keyword brainstorming

App Store Connect (built-in)

What you get free: your own app's impressions, product page views, conversion rate, and top search terms that led to installs.

What's missing: any sense of your actual keyword rankings, competitor data, or historical rank trends. ASC tells you that people found you, not where you rank for specific terms.

Verdict: essential baseline, but not an ASO tool on its own. Use it alongside a rank tracker.

iTunes Search API (the DIY route)

What you get free: top-200 ranking data for any keyword, any storefront, any app. No credentials, no account, no cost. This is the same data most paid tools resell.

What's missing: everything around it — no UI, no history, no alerts, no gap analysis. You're building your own tool with scripts and spreadsheets.

Verdict: genuinely powerful if you enjoy scripting. I wrote a full tutorial on using it. But the time cost adds up.

AppClimb (free tier) — my tool

What you get free: unlimited apps and keywords, top-200 rank tracking with historical charts, competitor discovery, keyword gap analysis, localized metadata studio, review monitoring, and PDF/CSV reports. All running locally on your Mac.

What's missing: search volume data (the API doesn't provide it — you'd need Apple Search Ads or a paid tool for that), and cloud sync is behind the $14.99/mo Pro tier.

Verdict: the free tier is the full local toolkit, not a crippled trial. I priced it this way because I was the target user — a solo dev who couldn't justify $90/month. It's macOS-only, which is the main limitation.

The paid tools (AppTweak, AppFollow, Mobile Action)

What you get: search volume estimates, keyword difficulty scores, and (at higher tiers) ad intelligence. These are genuinely valuable — volume data is the one thing you can't get for free.

What's missing from the free tiers: usually everything useful. Most "free" plans are either 7-day trials or so limited (1 app, 5 keywords) that they're demos, not tools.

Verdict: worth it once your app makes enough revenue that a $90/month tool pays for itself. For your first app, they're overkill.

My Honest Recommendation

If you're an indie dev on a Mac: start with App Store Connect (free, already yours) + a free rank tracker like AppClimb. That covers 90% of what you need. Only pay for a tool when you specifically need search volume data and your revenue justifies it.

If you're not on macOS: the DIY iTunes Search API route works on any platform, or use AppFollow's free tier for review monitoring.

The biggest mistake I see indie devs make isn't using the wrong tool — it's not tracking at all. A free tool you actually use beats a $90/month tool you abandon after two weeks.

Try the free tier. No card, no trial clock.

Unlimited apps and keywords, forever free. If it doesn't save you time in the first week, just delete it.
